Very spendy January

January 29th, 2026 at 08:07 pm

I did my monthly expense report a few days early cus I want to get started on my taxes soon.

It was a very spendy month, mostly because January is when I'm making the 2nd big pre-payment of $5K on the car loan. The reason I'm doing that is to overall reduce the amount of interest I pay on the loan. In 2025, I spent $871 in interest. My balance is down to $4,800, though, so I'm getting pretty close to payoff.

The other big expenses were the quarterly Medicare premium of over $600, so that's always an unpleasant bill. I also got carried away buying stuff for the house when the weather got bad, plus my electric bill was higher than usual, again due to the cold weather.

I'm wanting to regulate my ongoing expenses so that there aren't so many highs and lows. Once the car is paid off, I expect that to happen, though other big one-time expenses besides the quarterly Medicare bill are car and homeowners insurance.

I'm blowing off the gym today. I'm getting tired of this cold and I don't know when my handyman will be here exactly. I'll go tomorrow and so have just 2 workouts this week instead of 3. Unless I get super inspired to also go on Saturday.

Do your utilities offer Budget Billing? I've had my utilities on budget billing for probably 20 years. The monthly amount adjusts a bit maybe once or twice a year but it keeps that category of bills fairly constant.

Way to go on knocking that auto payment balance down, that’s awesome.

I skipped my workout today and ate a bunch of junk. I wasn’t feeling well and just didn’t want to be bothered.

Haha I tried to do my taxes twice, but both times, the computer told me to wait as my 1099s aren’t ready.

$4800 is basically next to nothing for you. Congrats!

I’ve always wondered how people who are forced to live on social security alone do it, because it’s just so little in money, especially after all the health premiums. Scary if you ask me, I hope to never find out.

Dido, budget billing is a good idea; I'm pretty sure my utility offers that, but I feel this obscures what your actual usage is and I think I'd feel better knowing that the bills accurately reflect my actual usage. That's just me, control freak, speaking.

Amber, yep. I changed into my workout clothes which hopefully will spur me to actually get to the gym today. It's another frigid day.

Tabs, at least starting my taxes is on my weekend things to do list.
