Let's get moving

August 5th, 2016 at 01:49 pm

I'm going to try to post a photo of each day's walk here, to make myself more accountable and more likely to follow through on my plan to walk 6 days a week.

Somehow, the weight has crept up on me. It's 146, making me heavier than I've ever been. I was in my 120s in my 20s and 30s. At age 50, I weighed 131 lbs. And now, 7 years later, I'm 15 lbs heavier. HOW DID THIS HAPPEN? I'm still not wholly vegan, maybe 75%, and it's usually eating out fairly often with dad that is when I go off vegan fare.

Aside from that, I still must be doing something wrong to be gaining, instead of losing. I must admit that while I rarely eat meat or dairy or white flour products, I do consume a fair amount of olive olive oil. This may be the culprit. For instance, one of my favorite things in summer is to pick the basil from my garden and make some pesto over whole grain pasta. The other way I consume oil is through salad dressings, and I do eat a lot of salads. I do have an oil-free salad dressing recipe I tried, which is pretty good, but I haven't made any lately.

I also have an oil-free pesto recipe but haven't tried it yet. Maybe it's time.

Today's walk was 45 minutes. I had to make a detour as the park I was planning on going through was filled with throngs of excited little children on some sort of summer school outing. I could hear their delighted shrieks and screams as they played a game clear across the meadow. Maybe they know they have only one more month of summer left and so many more games to play.

This is Ram Pasture in the center of town and about a mile from where I live. The local farmers used to communally graze their sheep here pre-Revolutionary War...hence the name.

This is the trail that leads to a park set up to attract the kiddies, with a pavilion that can be used for various activities, tennis courts and a little kids' playground, plus a skateboard park.

PS, consider the amount of grains (white flour or not) in your diet. I'm just a few years younger than you and apparently a similar size (My heaviest was 142.) and I've gotten into a good groove with my diet. I include plenty of good fats (oils like olive and flax as well as avocados) and lots of greens. But I cut back on carbs from grains so I rarely eat bread and pasta now. Those dietary changes and stopping my eating by 7ish in the evening have really boosted my health. I'm sure we're all different, but just a thought for you.

Thanks, Jenn. Yes, I'd forgotten i eat flax seeds daily with my breakfast cereal and there is the occasional avocado. I have whole grain pasta maybe once a week and whole grain bread a little more often. I'm reluctant to cut back on grains since my diet is pretty restrictive already and I don't really think i consume more than a moderate amount...but i'm glad it's working for you. I'm going to try making more of the oil-free salad dressing and avoid the pesto sauce.

I'm around where you are. I was in my 130s and occasionally 120s throughout my 20s and 30s, managed to get to a sweet spot of 127 or so around my 40th birthday, but crept up soon after that and have been stuck mostly in the 140s and occasionally high 130s since then. (I'm 42 now.)

I do think part of it is slowing metabolism. When I have one or two decadent eating days in a week, it tends to make me tick upward pretty reliably. Being really moderate for a week is no guarantee that I'll tick downward anymore. I used to eat out all the time and drink like a fish in my 20s and 30s, so I know I was consuming many more calories back then. I was maybe a bit more active, but I've never been really into exercise (except one brief shining 6-month period in my 20s when I worked out every day and got down to 116 lbs.).

Nice walk and good for you for posting pix. (How do you do that? I once knew but can't recall or find the right instructions to have an image actually show up in a post...I tried back in June and only got a link to click on). The weight creep really does build up once you are in your 50s. To keep my weight fairly stable (as you know, I am not thin), I severely cut back on grains as being less nutrient dense). Since losing my job I have also started on a TRF (time restricted feeding) schedule, making sure to have a fasting period each day of at least 16 hours to get my body to burn fat rather than glucose. Essentially I skip breakfast and eat lunch late. Because I don't eat a lot of sugar or refined carbs, I have not been hungry. Down 7 pounds in the first week, mostly water weight, but the fact that I am not hungry is most encouraging. See Bert Herring' s Fast-5 diet which you can get free on his site or his newer Appetite Control book (the one I read). Also Jason Fung's The Obesity Code details more of the science. He has you-tube lectures too. Lots of recent work on various IF (intermittent fasting) protocols suggests that periodic fasts are beneficial to health as well as weight.
