Luther has fleas

October 12th, 2017 at 01:02 am

So for about a week I see Luther scratching furiously. I think to myself, gee, it's almost as if he's getting bitten by fleas. But that couldn't be, I thought, since he's an indoor cat.

It was only when I finally examined his coat closely that I saw a flea! More than one! I was disgusted!

Went to Petco this morning before work and got some Frontline and a flea comb. Vaccumed the downstairs before I left for work.

Can't imagine how he picked them up. My dad sits outside in the grass at my sister's. I haven't even been on my own lawn much since I've been working. Perhaps he had one or two a week or so ago and now it's a full blown infestation.

I applied the Frontline; his hair is so thick. I hope I got enough on the skin. I've been combing fleas out as much as he will tolerate, which is to say, not that much. I got about 20 fleas off from around his neck. I found they can jump from the water's surface, so now I have a little bowl and i put small pieces of torn up paper towel on top of the flea after i flick them in there, so they can't jump and eventually drown.

I changed the bed sheets and threw them in the wash.

I plan to vacuum daily thru Sunday, anyway. I hope I won't have to flea bomb the place. And I do have 3 more months of the Frontline, if needed.

Ugh. One of our cats has spots in front of his ears that are kind of bald and scabbed I guess from scratching. Not like pictures of earmites I've seen online, more like allergies. A couple times it's seemed to get better and then gotten worse. I hate taking him to the vet because he fear-poops in the carrier, but it may not be avoidable for much longer.

Oh, how I hate fleas! I had lots of trouble when my cats were outdoor-indoor, but no problems since they became full-time indoor. Awful to think he could have gotten that much infestation from a single flea that rode in on someone's coattails.

Frontline is not very effective. Fleas have evolved to be immune to it. Advantage is also not very effective.

The current product that's available is Cheristin. It's available OTC. It's effective, but some cats do not process it well and it is toxic to those cats. Check with your vet before using it.

This morning I found fewer fleas on Luther, probably about a dozen. Some of them were dead so the Frontline must be working. I will continue daily combings. He seems to tolerate it better, perhaps becus he was so miserable running and hiding in out of the way places to try to escape the fleas, or perhaps becus he knows I'm trying to help. His fur is light colored, so that's a big help in spotting fleas.

I vacummed again this morning and dumped the stuff in the bin outside. I laundered the bed sheets.

Do you not normally put on medication for fleas and ticks especially where you live?

LivingAlmost Large, he's an indoor cat so no, I don't normally put meds for fleas/ticks on him.
