The little bunny

June 28th, 2016 at 12:37 am

Happily, the little brown bunny I've been seeing is still around. I was reading up on Eastern Cottontails and see their home range is usually about 1.4 acres, so it seems my yard is their existence. Smile

Interestingly, they don't dig their own digs but reuse other animals, burrows, such as woodchucks. Well, I certainly have a lot of those! And I have plenty of dense cover and escape routes for them.

May you prosper and multiply! I say that after 20 years of nearly no bunnies.

Finally, we're getting a little rain tonight, and more for tomorrow is expected. We've had weeks of perfect summer weather, but it's also been very dry, and my lawn is showing it.

In the meantime, the offering of a small dish of raisins has been enjoyed by somebody, not sure who. I left it in the driveway near the robin nest. Didn't want to put it too close to the nest in case it attracted predators, like crows, but near enough they may get to it first.

I would love to see the smart and fearless Elizabeth Warren as Hilary's running mate.

Countdown to the long weekend begins! Only 1 more day in the office. Smile

You're a better woman than I am. I tried to scare the brown bunny out of my back garden tonight. Unfortunately, or fortunately, I am not very scary. He looked at me and hopped away.

Carol, why scare it away? According to my reading, rabbits mostly eat "tender green herbaceous vegetation when it is available. In many areas Kentucky bluegrass and Canada bluegrass are important dietary components. Other favored species include clovers and crabgrasses. In Connecticut important summer foods include clovers, alfalfa, timothy bluegrasses, quackgrass, crabgrasses, redtop ragweed, goldenrods, plantains, chickweed, and dandelion."

Hmm, I didn't know birds enjoyed raisins, but I guess that makes sense.

Even though I live in a well populated area, we have an abundance of birds around us. We do have a lot of trees tucked among the rail station, businesses and homes, and a small creek, so I guess that's enough for the littler critters.

I think it has eaten some of my flowers. Something did. But I will try to think more kindly of it, if it eats the things you mentioned.

I have a bunny who seems to be living exclusively in the little courtyard in front of my building. Maybe it's several bunnies! They seem to move around from bush to bush, but they don't leave the courtyard.

They can decimate seedlings in a garden, they really love young, tender shoots, but tend to leave the larger plants alone. We use netting when our plants are small and then take it off later. There are plenty of other weeds that the wild rabbits eat, plus they love the raspberry and blackberry canes and leaves and there are plenty of those. They will also eat any low berries that are ripe, but we always have enough to spare. I don't mind sharing with the bunnies. It's the crows I mind.
