Forget Allstate...I may have found 24% savings with Safeco

October 9th, 2012 at 10:20 pm

Update to my last post:

Just got quotes from Safeco for car insurance ($82 better than what I have now with MetLife) and homeowners ($246 better than what I have now with MetLife). A considerable improvement.

Still, I'm anxious to call the guy tomorrow to make sure this isn't too good to be true. All the coverage is comparable or better than what I have now, but I'm concerned he made that quote without having the full details on my old house and car, so....

But now I'm really excited! And I may have to call the Allstate guy to let him now i won't be coming in the afternoon to sign the papers and pay up. He will probably be annoyed as he said he would have all the paperwork ready for me. Frown But gosh, the savings with him would be just $82.

Anyone have any experience with Safeco? I guess there will always be happy and unhappy customers with any carrier, though. Just wondering if they'll give me a great rate to snag me this year and then hike it up next year. That would be a bummer.

I have not even heard of them...but doesn't mean they are bad. I hope it is a reputable company and the savings would be worth it. I guess one way to look at it, if you aren't confident, is would you regret not paying the difference if there were to be a claims problem. I know I might regret it.

Safeco's been around a long time. They are now owned by Liberty Mutual. Just got off the phone with another independent agent who has now also said that Safeco is coming up with the best quote.

Creditcardfree, there could be "claims problems" with any insurer. but in fact that was one thing motivating me to shop around, becus I had read somewhere (years ago, admittedly), that MetLife came in dead last when it came to their track record for honoring claims.

If you do a search online, you'll come up with all sorts of disgruntled customers for EVERY insurance company. I don't pay attention to these comments.

I have now created a spreadsheet to keep track of all the quotes I'm getting! Except for Amica, which was actually $9 higher than my current MetLife policy, everyone who contacted me was able to save me money, ranging from about $83 to $328 a year. I've heard from or spoken to about 6 agents so far.

Interestingly, I heard from 2 different independent agents who both said Safeco offered the best rate, yet the figures they quoted for car and home were different from each other. They both asked detailed questions about my car and home, so the only thing I can attribute the difference to is perhaps the agent makes more money if they bill me more for the policy?

Using an online site for soliciing quotes makes the job much easier, I think.

I agree...they all are going to have good and bad reviews.

It sure does pay to shop around doesn't it? Nice job!
